Since 1977, May 18th has been a day for museums all around the world to celebrate the past year’s hard work by holding events and exhibitions to be enjoyed by the public. Run by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), International Museums Day is a great opportunity to reflect on the educational and informative power of museums and to encourage public awareness of the role of museums in society.

International Museums Day strives to facilitate the connections between museums and people by keeping museums relevant and event rich. With a proud focus on history and education, museums are continually challenged by the need to “revamp the traditional methods of presentation of their collections in order to involve the community and to remain in touch with their public” says Dr Hans-Martin Hinz, ICOM President.

Every year ICOM select a different theme for International Museums Day, to help inspire exhibits around the world. The theme for 2014 is ‘Museum collections make connections’. ICOM selected this theme as a reminder that museums are living institutions that help create bonds between visitors, generations and cultures around the world. With almost 35,000 museums expected to participate in 143 different countries, 2014 is expected to be the biggest Museums Day yet with lots of exciting and original events taking place internationally.

International Museums Day strives to facilitate the connections between museums and people by keeping museums relevant and event rich.

ICOM has several events in NSW, from Albury to Port Macquarie. Eskbank House and Museum in Lithgow is encouraging residents to bring in an artefact from home to discover its story and origin, while New England Regional Art Museum offers visitors to be part of the exhibit itself as they collect 500 faces in for their large scale digital mash-up project.

So come along on the 18th of May and enjoy what your museum has to offer as the world celebrates the historical and educational insights that only museums can provide. Intel dp43tf drivers.
